Seawall Prophet

Seawall Prophet is the alias of Aaron Markland…. Award-Winning and Published Singer/Songwriter, U.S. Air Force Veteran, Retired Albuquerque Firefighter, and self-proclaimed Soul Surfer born and raised in San Diego, California [Ocean Beach]. The music of Seawall Prophet is an amalgam of Aaron’s diverse musical history rooted in So-Cal beach culture that showcases a unique blend of Blues, Funk, Rock, Punk, Reggae, and Acoustic Roots. Aaron has written, produced, and recorded six full-length albums and many more singles to date with songs featured both in movies and television. Aaron has a residency at Wonderland Ocean Pub in Ocean Beach every other Wednesday starting at Sunset and can be seen touring under the name Seawall Prophet solo acoustic, duo acoustic, and with his dynamic full band.

Aaron Markland got his musical start while attending Point Loma High School in San Diego. Him and his older brother Justin (Bass) formed a garage punk band called Soylent Green and within a few months cut their first and only album “It’s People”. The group disbanded after High School and Aaron decided to enlist in USAF Special Forces Pararescue. Once fulfilling his contract and being honorably discharged, Aaron used the influences of Jack Johnson and Ben Harper to record his debut solo album “Rewind” at Treefort Studios in Hollywood CA, produced by Chris Julian (Billy Idol, Queen Latifah) and Robert Vaughn (CBS, Sony). Several songs from that album were featured in Noah Taffolla’s acclaimed “Wonderland” documentary series.

Years later Aaron and his brother Justin decided to recruit their father, Steve “Tunker” Markland (Harmonica), and uncle Randy Jones (Drums) to start the funky blues rock family band MARKLAND. MARKLAND recorded their debut self-titled album in 2014, and completed the entire project in one month’s time. The album was produced by OB local Michael Head of “The Country Rockin’ Rebels” at Headtrap Music Studio in La Mesa, CA (Cabeza Records). After their debut album release, MARKLAND was signed by Crucial Music Publishing, sold thousands of downloads, and were played on radio stations across California, Arizona, and New Mexico. MARKLAND opened for Leif Garrett at the World Famous Whiskey A Go Go in Hollywood, performed on the Main Stage at the 2015 Ocean Beach Street Fair, and are featured in the 2017 documentary “Adventures of Miss Fit”, produced by Gregg Simpson at Llama Pictures.

While living in New Mexico and working as a Lieutenant Paramedic in the Albuquerque Fire Department, Aaron recorded his sophomore solo album entitled “Tide Break”. The album was recorded at Wall of Sound Studio and produced by John Wall and Aaron Markland. The Beach/Rock/Reggae album was nominated for 3 categories in the 2017 New Mexico Music Awards including Best Pop Album (Tide Break), Best Reggae Song (Tide Break), and Best Modern Rock Song (Burn It Out).

Aaron’s side project and alternative rock band Self Contained decided to enter the Glory in the Desert Battle of the Bands, where they won 1st place against 70 of the best musical acts across New Mexico. The band was gifted free studio time and subsequently recorded and released their debut album "Depravity" at Wall of Sound Studio, produced by John Wall. The album went on to win Best Rock Album at the 2019 New Mexico Music Awards. Featured on the album is Aaron Markland (Guitar/Vocals), Jake Franks (Guitar/Vocals), Paul Lamb (Bass), and Tim Archuleta (Drums).

Back in San Diego, the band Seawall Prophet formed when Aaron joined forces with core members of the Jazz-Infused Zzajj band: AJ Price (Bass), Chris Price (Guitar), and Steve Cunningham (Drums). Seawall Prophet’s debut EP “Off the Ledge” was released Fall 2022 on Pacific Records and quickly rose to #3 on the iTunes Reggae Charts. Seawall Prophet next teamed up with Sol Turpin of Wabasa Records and Reggae Hit Masters to release the original DUB Reggae song “Tide Break (Wabasa Records Mix)” and “Danny’s Song”, a Loggins & Messina cover. Fall 2023, Seawall Prophet cut two new singles “Green Dress” and “Golden Hue” recorded LIVE at Satellite SW by Jeff Berkley, produced by Aaron Markland and Patricio Pickslay.
