Lil Mega is paving her own way. At just 18 years old, the rapper/singer/songwriter is well on her way to becoming a notable influence for her generation.
The Montclair, New Jersey native (real name Megan Hackett) started early in realizing her musical talents. She comes from a musical and artistic family that exposed Lil Mega to the arts from birth.
A trained actor, stand-up comedian, musician and athlete of Jamaican, Ashkenazi Jewish and African-American descent, Lil Mega has always had dreams of becoming a performer.
Before the age of ten, she had started studying comedy and became the youngest comic to ever grace the Gotham Comedy Club stage. She has performed at Broadway Comedy Club, getting her start in their comedy and improv program, and by age 11, Lil Mega had performed at Caroline’s Comedy Club during Keenan Thompson's (SNL) kid comic showcase.
Lil Mega has filmed dozens of videos as a food critic for Bon Appetit, has acted in plays at Newark Symphony Hall, been featured in ads with Nina Dobrev (Vampire Diaries) for Reebok in Allure Magazine, filmed segments for Glamour for the Woman of the Year Awards and another Glamour segment with Jordana Brewster (Fast and Furious), done voiceover work for Square Space, a commericial for Sargento and she has even filmed a special Conde Nast project with Cookie Monster. As if all of that wasn't enough, this girl has got skills in the kitchen, too. Lil Mega was featured on the Food Network and was selected as a runner-up on the Food Network show ‘Chopped Junior,’ where she also wowed the judges with her beatboxing skills.
In addition to being a Jazz-trained vocalist, Lil Mega also plays five instruments and has been performing since age nine at various venues with her pop/rock band, including legendary places like the Stone Pony.
It was only after Lil Mega entered middle school and encountered extreme acts of bullying by over three dozen children, that she pulled back from public life, social media and performing altogether. She was constantly teased for her uniqueness, but when acts of aggression became so intense that the school district assigned an adult to guard her daily in school for two school years, Lil Mega had completely lost her passion for signing and playing music.
It was at this point that her mother realized she needed an outlet and encouraged Lil Mega to channel her frustrations into any artistic outlet, instead of resorting to violence or retreating into a shell.
Still not wanting to sing, and taking a break from performing with her band, Lil Mega then turned to rap as her artistic outlet. Choosing to 'fight back' through her lyrics, Lil Mega started therapeutically writing rap songs and infusing her jazzy, soulful vocals, about what she was experiencing. This journey also morphed into her making her own beats.
After she had completed enough songs for an album, and seeing that she actually had some rap skills, Lil Mega’s mom decided to book studio time for her to release the songs on her debut album, ‘Bullied Black Girl.’
With thousands of plays that her debut album got, as an independent artist, Lil Mega soon discovered how her message was connecting with thousands of people around the world.
Lil Mega’s soulful voice, quick witted rhymes and multiple talents are starting to create a buzz in the industry.
She may be young but she’s certainly accomplished and driven with hopes that her music and journey will inspire young teens just like her.
