Growing up in the melting pot that is London, I’ve had some pretty diverse musical influences and I’ve always loved that place where cultures meld together to make fresh, new sounds. It’s that blending of genres that fascinates me most and informs much of my own writing. I realised fairly young that my voice was my best instrument, and from then on I was always the lead singer in the bands I started or joined. After a few trial runs I co-founded a nine-piece Latin band which soon evolved into a seven-piece soul/funk outfit called Pride, the band from which one of my backing singers, Sade, later emerged. I also played with some great percussion players around that time and did my fair share of the rhythm work, especially on the congas.
But crafting a song in the studio held more appeal for me than performing, so I began to focus on writing. My heroes were (and still are) Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Prince and Bowie; all masters of melody, harmony and rhythm, the three key ingredients in good songs. My own catalogue is fairly diverse but, whatever the genre, I like to pepper my compositions with well-crafted, thought-provoking lyrics, soulful tunes and infectious grooves.
I'm pitching a lot to film and TV opportunities and building good relationships with libraries and music supervisors. Collaborating with other writers, performers and producers is the way forward, no doubts. As Aristotle famously said, ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’. And there’s nothing like being stretched by another writer; made to dig deeper for that killer line or riff that will set the song apart from the 'norm'.
My goal? To write something timeless. A song that outlives me and becomes a part of popular culture. A song the next generation will
know the words to. Now, that would be an accomplishment. I’m always looking to work with new writers, so feel free to get in touch and let’s see what we can do.
