1979-1983 Solo Deal Atlanta – Epic Records/ATLANTA
Ralph was introduced to Leon Silverberg a local Epic producer and worked on a solo deal with Epic as Ralph Truepenny. A new set of songs were recorded locally with producer Kurt Kinzel. The tapes were shopped but did not result in a new record deal. Ralph worked at Rhythm City Music in Atlanta while pursuing the solo deal and also played with Micheal Moody Band until Oberheim offered him a job and moved him to Los Angeles to enter the music industry products business and still writes and records regularly.
1977-1979
StarCastle. - Matt Stewart, Gary Strater, Tass, Steve Haggler /
From April Monday playing in Champagne, met Matt and friends. When Herb quit and Terry was kicked out, StarCastle was looking for a keyboard player who could sing. Ralph wanted to rock more, so he left and auditioned for StarCastle in Champagne. They liked Ralph's original music, so he moved to Illinois. The band offered him to join. Ralph moved to Champaign Urbana – band’s base.
The remaining members of StarCastle wanted to do more rock in their music and more song based rather than pure prog rock. The band went for a new record deal with Jeff Glixman producing and doing a spec deal. The band had good interest but the timing was bad for bands leaving record labels resulting in no deal. After touring and many showcases with no result, Ralph left to go to Atlanta where he had family. Gary, Matt, and Tass joined him in Atlanta and a four piece group “The Pack” was formed and played a few gigs. We did a new spec tape with Jeff Glixman but Tass left to go back to school and Gary and Matt moved back to Champagne.
Timberline Era
In 1977, Ralph was asked out to Denver to audition for Timberline. He accepted the offer and moved out there. Album on Epic Records.
Timberline played several gigs and backed up some big acts. They even turned down being Dolly Parton's backup band. Despite new originals, they band did not get label interest and eventually fizzed out. Later in 1977, Ralph was asked to audition for Glen Hughes from Deep Purple in LA. He started rehearsals with Glen Hughes, Tim Gerht, and Brett Tuggle in L.A. and met Jeff Glixman (music producer for Kansas and Satellites). When Glen left, Ralph went back to work at ProSound for a bit. After that, Ralph joined The Fliers, a country band, for a few months and recorded at Boulder's Caribou Ranch with producer Marty Cohn (Doobie Brothers).
