Alan Hall grew up in a musical household, with piano, guitar, and brass instruments being played and available for experimentation. In addition to these he learned viola, and later double bass viol. As a young adult, Alan became intrigued with electronic and tape music from composers new and old. He was hands-on with modular synthesizers and was there when MIDI was born. Digital synthesis and recording soon followed to flesh out an extended apprenticeship with musical technology. Throughout his studies (both academic and personal) Alan combined composition and electronic music, participating at new music festivals around Ohio. As part of his graduate associate duties at Ohio University, he taught electronic music and recording classes.
Over the years, Alan was introduced to and became acquainted with music that spanned centuries, including contemporary artists that have changed music forever. A list of names dropped would be self-serving and painfully incomplete. It is sufficient and telling to admit he absorbed as much of these influences as he could - classical, new age, jazz, rock - and the extended techniques that broke new ground in these genres. Alan started a solo project in 2007 called The F7 Project, and has produced music since then under that moniker. The production of these albums – originally conceived as a kind of vanity project – include a mix of styles, moods, and messages that represent the heart of his output at the moment of their creation.
Over time, the F7 project has evolved to encapsulate the ethos that Alan holds close: tolerance and compassion, honesty and respect. This music is crafted to interface with and affect the environment in ways that encourage renewal of the mind, and foster wonder in the imagination.
