I first became interested in music when I was about 7 years old. I kept playing the musical figure in a song when the chorus went into the bridge I played that old 78 over and over transfixed.
Then next thing to happen was the 60s and I heard Dylan in 1962 also the Rolling Stones. The first record I bought was It’s all over now by the Stones. Desolation Row was 11 min 18 sec long and singing it to myself took the time of my cycle ride to school.
At 16 I got my first guitar and took classical guitar lessons.
As soon as I realised I could play Blowing in the Wind with three chords I was hooked. A year later I was playing in folk clubs, where I became immersed in Traditional Folk and contemporary songs.
As for influences a wise person once said open your eyes and ears and you’re influenced. Among mine are John Prine, Fairport Convention, Lucinda Williams and Hank Williams.
I like a song with a good story saying something good lyrics and a memorable melody. I started writing in 1972 and the first song that was halfway good was Someone else is singing the song.
