Jason Asistores
Harrisonburg, VA
From neoclassical piano tunes to minimalist drones and new age instrumentals,
ambient music artist Jason Asistores endeavors to create pieces that explore the
expansive emotional landscapes within tones and timbres when they are left by
themselves to breathe and evolve over time. In a sense, music always takes us on
a journey from one place to another, but in the case of Asistores’ music, the
destination is not in some distant land faraway, but inward, where the space is
limitless, and the terrain can be both familiar and unexpected at the same time.
Though his influences initially included composers and artists such as Philip
Glass, John Luther Adams, and Nils Frahm, he admits that he now largely
draws inspiration from American color field painters like Mark Rothko and Helen
Frankenthaler. Just as their paintings juxtapose unadorned hues with edges that
appear to blend and shimmer, Asistores utilizes lush pads and simple harmonies that
gradually bleed into each other, often blurring where one chord ends and the
other begins.
Having come from a musical background playing in bars and clubs, his perspective on
music began to shift after spending some time working in healthcare, with an
approach now centered on music not just as art or entertainment, but as
medicine. In his own words: “Music has the power to put our broken and
wounded pieces back together in a way that is not like any other; it makes us
whole. I feel lucky that on some level, I’m able to pursue the vocation of
healing in a creative and artistic sense. Yet at the same time, it’s not THAT special
at all either, as I sincerely believe that all of us have the capacity to heal each
other, and that all of us are called to do so. It just so happens that
music is the most personal and most meaningful way I’m able to answer
that call, which is really such a gift.”
